Roof Replacement on a Solar Home in Colchester, CT
Challenge
The homeowner here was buying a home in Colchester, CT and upon having the roof evaluated, we discovered that it would need to be replaced. There were three tell-tale visual signs; algae, moss and curling shingles. This job was a little more complex as it involved the removal and replacement of solar panels. These quite collectors of the sun provide an alternative to solely relying on the power grid, but more importantly they greatly help in reducing our carbon footprint. Protecting the planet starts at the home. Having a healthier localized ecosystem, with less reliance on fossil fuels, will help in creating a healthier environment all around.
Solution
The majority of asphalt roofs are suitable for solar panels, as long as there is the proper allotted space. Of course, they must be positioned where they will get enough sunlight. You should never install panels on an old roof, or a roof that is within even five years of its lifespan. It is also essential to properly flash the areas where the panels attach to your roof, so that water is diverted and that small debris cannot accumulate. The shingles we used here were OC True Def Duration Estate Gray, which effectively compliment the home's blue siding. Underneath, we replaced all of the rotted plywood and applied Ice & Water shield to get that extra protection against moisture. Ridge and eave vents were added to ensure breathability between the roof and attic. With a sturdy foundation, these solar panels will be able to provide years of sustainable, clean energy.
