The Bingham estate, which includes several properties, has entrusted Klaus Larsen Roofing with repairs and improvements. One of the homes, a historic farmhouse built in the mid-1800s and placed in a family trust 30-40 years ago, was in particular need of attention. The house originally had a cedar roof, but the quality of the cedar was poor, leading to ongoing issues. Additionally, there were significant ventilation problems caused by multiple hidden attics, making it difficult to apply modern solutions to such an old structure. Water damage was also a major concern, with water consistently entering the basement due to improper drainage from the roof. To address these challenges, the family came to Klaus Larsen Roofing to install a new roof.
Solution
The solution for this historic farmhouse began with tearing off the old cedar roof and replacing it with durable asphalt shingles. Since the house had skip sheathing, which needs to breathe, we installed a plywood deck over it—an essential upgrade. To solve the ventilation problem, we implemented a super roof hybrid. Although additional insulation wasn't necessary, we needed the house to breathe, so we installed batt insulation and created a 3/4-inch separation between the base roof and the new roof to allow airflow. We added SmartVent ventilation at the eaves to let air flow under the roof and installed ridge vents at the top to allow proper ventilation throughout the entire roof system.
Because the roof level was raised, we addressed the siding attachment by adding a freeze board where the siding hadn't been redone in about 30 years. We replaced the older, unattractive siding with new clapboard siding, enhancing the home’s appearance. Finally, we installed 50-year asphalt shingles, providing a long-lasting and more cost-effective solution. We also added Gutter Shutter, and since then, no water has entered the home. The family is thrilled with the outcome, as it not only improved the look of the house but also extended its longevity significantly.
This photo highlights the condition of the roof before our Klaus Larsen Roof Replacement team got to work. Over the years, the old shingles had become covered in moss, algae, and other debris, leading to a roof that not only looked worn and neglected but was also vulnerable to further damage.
The homeowners turned to Klaus Larsen Roofing for a much-needed upgrade. With our expert team on the job, they were ready to give their home a fresh start with a new, durable, and long-lasting roof designed to withstand the elements and keep their home looking beautiful for years to come.
In this photo, you can see our crew in action as they begin stripping the old shingles off the roof. Removing the old shingles allows us to assess the overall condition of the roof structure and make any necessary repairs, ensuring a solid foundation for the new roof.
Since the roof's decking had skip sheathing, we needed to cover it with a new layer of plywood boards. This step is crucial because it ensures that when nails are driven into the roof during shingle installation, they securely anchor into solid wood rather than an open gap. Without this extra layer of plywood, there would be a risk of shingles loosening or sliding off over time, compromising the roof's durability. By adding this layer, we create a stable, even surface for the shingles, guaranteeing a secure and long-lasting installation.
Here, you can see the layers of protection we install over the decking to ensure maximum water resistance. First, we apply VeloraOne Deck Tape, which seals the seams between plywood boards, preventing water from seeping through even the smallest gaps. Next, we add the SealoronXT Ice & Water Shield, a durable layer that protects the roof's most vulnerable areas, such as edges and valleys, from ice dams and water intrusion. Finally, we lay down the VeloraOne Roof Underlayment, a secondary barrier that covers the entire roof, providing an extra line of defense against moisture. Together, these protective layers work to keep the home safe and dry, even in the harshest weather conditions.
At this stage, the installation of the IKO Dynasty shingles has begun. Known for their superior durability and weather resistance, these shingles provide exceptional protection against high winds, heavy rain, and other harsh conditions. The IKO Dynasty shingles also feature a modern design, enhancing the overall appearance of the home while offering long-lasting performance.
Here is the final look of this beautiful home after the roof replacement. With the IKO Dynasty shingles in place, the house now looks sleek and updated. Not only does the new roof enhance the curb appeal, but it also provides extensive protection and durability, ensuring the home is ready to withstand any weather for years to come. It's a true example of the difference a Klaus Larsen roof can make!
The beautiful new shingles have truly transformed the home, and the family couldn't be happier with the result. This family now has peace of mind knowing their home is both well-protected and visually stunning. The Klaus Roofing Way!
