Incorporating Baffles into Vent System in Ledyard, CT
Challenge
There were some serious problems with ventilation, concentrated around the attic area of this Ledyard, CT home. We found a significant dust build up on a fabric screen that had been applied to the original ridge vent. This was not allowing air to circulate, which resulted in both mold and excessive humidity inside the house. Also evident was some minor damage done to the drywall and styrofoam boards. As hot air gets stuck inside the attic space, it can actually cause shingles to warp if not pushed out through gable vents.
Solution
When rebuilding the first layer of decking, we incorporated baffles between the ridge and soffit vent. Simply installing baffles within your home's venting scheme can add years to your roof. These synthetic pre-constructed pieces also deter wind from shifting insulation out of place, which was especially beneficial to the 'blown-in' style insulation of this home. Essentially, we are creating room for the house to breath, as a little space can go a long way. We sealed this job with OC TrueDef Onyx Black shingles.
