When we inspected the attic of this home in Gales Ferry, CT, we discovered indicators of excessive moisture. Upon removing the shingles we saw the results of some serious water damage in the delaminated plywood. The plywood was literally splintering apart as a constant cycle of dampening and drying had unglued each layer of material. Properly installed attic vents, paired with a new shingle and underlayment system, have put an end to this house's troubles with water damage.
Connecticut is most definitely not considered an area of the country with 'dry heat.' Humid, coastal regions are especially prone to Gloeocapsa Magma, known commonly as the algae that appears as black staining on roofs. This East Lyme home was suffering from a bout of the unsightly bactera. For this roof replacement, we used Owens Corning shingles, which are manufactured with an algae resistant material infused with the granule of the asphalt.
On this ranch in Lebanon, CT we provided another Owens Corning Life Time Roofing System, with its 50 year full Coverage Warranty. On this job we did a good amount of structural repair, including removing and replacing the fascia/rake boards with Kleer composite trim boards. In addition, we removed a kitchen vent as well as a small, secondary chimney. The main chimney was redone with leak proof flashing. The resulting roof is practical, efficient and far less cluttered.
The John S. Schoonover house was originally built in 1800, and owned by its namesake banker. The entire restoration spanned two months and included new exterior paint, Marvin pocket windows with over twelve simulated divided lights with aluminum clad exterior, a newly paved driveway and white cedar Cape Cod picket fences. Klaus Larsen was happy to provide the new roof, as a part of this now beautifully preserved home by the coast.
This was a raised ranch with attached garage in Groton, CT. It was completed with two layers of True Def Duration Quarry Gray shingles, with SureNail strip technology. The trademark SureNail strip features “a unique triple layer of reinforcement that occurs when the fabric overlays the common bond of the shingle laminate.” These strips also require less nails, which mean less trauma for your decking. Three rows of 9' Ice & Water shield were installed to all of the eaves in addition. We also removed and reinstalled a lightning rod system.
The time had come for the roof to be replaced on this Baltic, CT house, as thousands of bee's were entering the attic. We first had to re-box their entry area in with composite in order to keep these uninvited guests out for good. We also used special flashing material to match the color of the home, so that everything would look uniform. Extensive deck protection and ventilation was incorporated, including solar powered Fresh Air Deck mounts, and a VentSure ridge vent under True Def Duration Estate Gray shingles.
We replaced this Montville roof in 2012, with a Lifetime Owens Corning Roofing System. In 2016, the customer reported that a 5 ft. section of shingles seemed to be lifting up. We came out, inspected the roof and repaired the compromised section. With Klaus Larsen, your home is protected long after the install, with a 50 Year Warranty from Owens Corning. We are here for you, no matter what nature throws your way.
This roof in Montville, CT came out looking totally gorgeous. The 'after' picture was actually taken two years after the 2014 installation. Our roofs are made from some of the most durable materials available, and keep their sharp aesthetic appearance for decades. The shingles used on this project are OC True Def Duration in 'Desert Tan,' with matching hip & ridge cap shingles.
The last time this was roof was replaced was in 1994, which made the shingles 22 years old. The project began with recycling one layer of the old asphalt shingles, which are then re-purposed into pavement for roads. After protecting the plywood with moisture proof sealing-rubber, we installed new starter shingles to prevent water from backing up at the drip edge. We finished by replacing the shed roof, with matching Estate Grey shingles.
We first met this customer in Old Lyme, CT after providing a roof replacement for his neighbor. When we stripped the old shingles off the home, we found that most of the plywood was rotting and causing the roof to curve in a "U" shape. We replaced all of the rotted plywood, in order to re-secure the deck and installed Ice & Water shield with Sierra Gray shingles from Owens Corning.
On this job in Niantic, CT we began by tearing off one layer of old shingles. We then flashed the eaves and rake with a 8”x1.5” aluminum drip edge along the outside perimeter. All existing vent pipe boots were also replaced with new 1-2” Perma vent pipe boots. In addition to the roof, all new aluminum seamless gutters were installed. The downspouts were replaced as well and customized to their house's particular design. This job is protected by an Owens Corning Platinum Protection Warranty, only available through Platinum Contractors, who represent less than 5% of all roofers in the industry.
For this job in Stonington, CT we tore off and provided disposal of two layers of old roofing material. The new shingles we installed are Harbor Blue Owens Corning TrueDefinition Duration shingles with a SureNail strip. These shingles carry a 50-year Lifetime Warranty, which really goes above and beyond other warranties in the industry. We also flashed a metal chimney, and provided an extensive clean up of the job, with only a premium roof and warranty in our wake.
Here was a Cape in Groton, CT that had reached the absolute maximum lifespan of its roof. Shingles were curling and actually missing in several places. We gave this home a full roofing system, in Onyx Black shingles with a matching Owens Corning VentSure Ridge Vent. This vent comes with a Weather Protector moisture barrier that provides consistent attic ventilation. The old roofing asphalt was recycled, and will be used for CT and MA road paving. Call or contact us today for a free price estimate on your roof replacement project.
This house over in Gilman (Bozrah) had two skylights and a wooden chimney that needed work along with the roof. After the 20-year-old roof was torn off, our roofers installed the new Estate Gray roof on the same day. The chimney was reflashed with lead flashing and purpose made flashing kits for the skylights. Why did the skylights and chimney need to be reflashed? Over time, metal flashing gets worn and bent and won't keep water out after the roof is ripped off. So every time we do a roof project, we replace skylight and chimney flashing to ensure the home stays completely dry.
We came out to this property in North Stonington because the owner was experiencing problematic leaks around both chimneys. We were called out because we have a lot of experience replacing chimney flashing with roofs. Why does a roofing contractor need to replace the chimney flashing? After a roof is torn off, the old flashing is bent and won't keep the water out. The first step we take to do this is remove (grout out) the old mortar around the old flashing. Then we insert the new lead chimney flashing piece into the joint between the bricks. The chimney is finished off with new mortar-seal and the job is complete.
We may be known for our roofing but Klaus Larsen also offers quality siding work as well. At this house in Bozrah, the owner required new siding and soffits. The siding we use is Mastic vinyl siding with 4" exposure. After the siding is removed, we always install a rigid foam board to insulate the walls. Then the siding is installed and all the windows have to be rewrapped with Aluminum window wrap. Lastly, the owner wanted the soffits redone with vinyl soffits on all the overhangs. Our installers have years of Siding experience and can work with any challenges your home might have.
This owner in Waterford had a difficult issue around the dormer on his house. Water was coming into the house right where the dormer stood. So the shingles and siding were torn off to reveal the damaged plywood. New plywood was installed and underlayment was then laid down to protect the plywood from future damage. Then the shingles were installed with the siding and all the debris was cleaned up. The owner had hired us before to fix some cracked siding and was very happy with the work we did.
Many times we are asked by homeowners if their old skylights can be left as-is when we replace the roof? If the skylights are in good condition, we will work around them. However, many times we visit homes with old or even leaking skylights. In these cases, like this home in Mystic, the old skylights would have to be replaced. Here in Mystic, the garage had two small skylights on one side. We replaced the old skylights with New Velux Laminated skylights. If the Velux skylight doesn't quite fit the opening we will send one of our production crew to reframe the opening and finish off the interior!
At this home in Norwich, the entire roof was torn off along with a small flat roof section over the sun room. After the old asphalt shingles were torn off, underneath was found tongue and groove boards. We often find tongue and groove boards in homes built in the 40's and 50's. Once the roof deck was exposed, we could then access the rotten boards and replace them. Next came the ice & Water shield. We use 9' of Ice & Water, which is above code, to provide complete protection from Ice Dams. All other exposed decking is covered with Pro Armor synthetic underlayment. Finally, the shingles go up and the entire area is cleaned up. Although this roof was done in the winter, our technicians are experts in winter roofing and adjust their installation methods accordingly. At the end of the day, the homeowners get to enjoy a new roof that is guaranteed for 50 years!
In April of 2015, we were asked to replace this roof out in Niantic. The home was a tall two-story building with an attached 2 car garage. The owners needed a new roof and wanted one that would match their light brown cedar siding. When the roofers arrived, they set up right away and began tearing off the roof. First, tarps were attached to the roof edge to deflect any falling debris away from the house. Then the Ice & Water barrier and Synthetic underlayment were put down. Finally, the new Duration Sand Dune shingles were nailed down. The nails are made secure by the SureNail strip that runs the length of the shingle, providing an extra layer to the shingle and locking the nails in place. The roof was completed in one day along with the chimney and vent boots. Not to their surprise, the homeowners were very happy with the new roof and clean yard.
Early in the spring of 2015, we visited this home in New London because the owners were experiencing severe leaks. Water was collecting in their attic under the shed dormer and dripping into their dining room. The water was coming through the large shed dormer that covered the back part of their roof. Shed dormers are common areas for leaks because the flat area doesn’t shed water very quickly. Ice tends to stay on dormer for a longer time as well. So instead of installing regular shingles on the dormer, we installed commercial grade flat roofing called MuleHide. We installed the first flat roofing layer which is similar to Ice & Water Barrier. Then the granulated later is laid down. The backing of both layers is covered with an adhesive so it sticks and seals the top of the dormer roof. The shingles and any needed flashing were also replaced to keep water from entering the sides of the dormer. Now the area is completely sealed off from any more water. After the roof was installed, New London had a couple of harsh rains storms but the house remained dry.
Not only is Klaus Larsen Roofing an expert in roofing but also provides siding and gutter replacement. At this home in Waterford the owners wanted to renovate the entire exterior of their home. We use Owens Corning for shingles because of the 50 year warranty we carry as Platinum Contractor. We install 4” Mastic vinyl siding. During a siding job the all the windows and doors need to be rewrapped in aluminum before the new siding can go on. Our installers are craftsmen when it comes to removing and replaced the siding on your home. We also use composite fascia boards to replace rotten fascia. The advantage of composite is that carpenter bees and wood peckers won’t drill into it. Finally we use Aluminum seamless gutters with Leaf Relief gutter guards. Klaus Larsen is able to handle any home exterior remodeling job there is.
How do you know when its time to replace your roof? Generally, its a good idea to get the roof replaced before the leaks show up. When it starts leaking, not only do you get large stains on the ceiling but in some cases, the paint will start cracking and peeling off. This was the situation at the Masons’ Island Yacht Club in Mystic. The cracks and stains told the owners loud and clear that a new roof was needed. When we replace a roof we not only have a process but the roofing itself is a system of layers that protect your home. First, we tore off 2,800 square feet of shingles off the roof. Then we replaced any rotted tongue and groove boards with 3/4” CDX plywood. Next, comes the Underlayment. We use Owens Corning roofing system which comes with Weather Lock Ice & Water barrier and ProArmor Synthetic Underlayment. The shingles come in three types Starter shingles, the Shingle, and Hip & Ridge shingles. The shingles themselves have a nailing area called a SureNail strip that thickens the nailing area and seals the nails once they are down. Once the entire system is down, we guarantee the roof with the longest warranty in the industry. We will even clean up the debris ourselves and remove it from the property. All nails are cleaned up and owners are paid back $1.00 for each nail left behind. Now members and owners alike can enjoy the view of the water without having water inside.
The owners of this ranch in Groton had a major leak that was right above the kitchen cabinets. So every time they had a heavy rain, the dishes would get a surprise washing. When they got a door hanger from us promoting our winter roofing, they immediately got a quote from us and scheduled the work for later that month. Suddenly a major rainstorm was on its way and the owners were worried that if they did not get the roof fixed soon they would have a mess on their hands. So they called and, because it was an emergency job, we were able to move up the work and got it done before the storm came. Our crew came and tore off the old shingles and replaced the rotten sheets of plywood. They then installed nine feet of Ice and Water barrier and installed Synthetic Underlayment. The shingles were Owens Corning Duration Quarry Grey. The entire installation, start to finish, was done in one day and the crew cleaned up the yard thoroughly. When the rainstorm finally came and poured down on their home, the owners opened up their cabinets to check on the leak and it was all dry.
This beautiful home sat in a quiet part of Mystic, CT. The roof and gutters on this house were old and needed replacing. The owner also wanted the dormers to be redone and all the trim work around the house. Before our crews started on the roof, we had our production team go to the property and put up the stone veneer on the two front dormers. Next, our roofing crews came on the scheduled date and tore off the old roof. They then immediately checked the condition of the roof deck before installing the Ice & Water Barrier. We always install 9 feet of WeatherLock G; Ice & Water, that way, we are well above where the ice dams form. Above the Ice & Water, we nail down Synthetic underlayment on the roof deck. Lastly, comes the Owens Corning Duration Shingles. The owners chose the Duration Driftwood color for their roof. Once the shingles were down, our production team did the final touches of siding, rake & trim boards, and gutters. The owners also asked us to do the stone veneer on the front wall of the breezeway. The yard was completely cleaned up afterward and the finished job came out beautifully.
The owners of this older home in Colchester were looking for a new roof when they called Klaus Larsen. The house was beautiful brick building and, upon inspection of the roof, we found tongue and groove board decking instead of plywood. Tongue and Groove boards are a common decking for homes build in the 1940's and 1950's. We found boards around the chimney that were completely rotten and replaced them with thick 3/4' CDX Plywood. Then we removed and replaced the chimney flashing and the flashing on the breezeway roof. Once the plywood and flashing were set, we were able to install the Ice & Water underlayment, Synthetic underlayment, and the Duration Shingles.
Many times we see contractors apply roofing cement or tar to fix the flashing leaks but that is only a temporary fix. When we replace a roof, we get down to the root of the issue and reflash and seal chimney flashing to prevent any water from entering the house once we have done the roof. When it is time to do your roof make sure your contractor will replace the chimney flashing to prevent leaks from occurring down the road. It is for this reason Klaus Larsen replaces the chimney flashing on every roof replacement.
This home in Norwich had parts of the roof replaced with Owens Corning Duration shingles. The rest was left with outdated 3-tab shingles. The 3-tab roof was very old and the owners knew it was time to get it replaced. Not only were we able to replace the damaged part of roof in one day but we were able to get the entire roof to match perfectly. We knew the newer section of the roof was Owens Corning Duration because of it's iconic SureNail strip. This is a nylon strip that Owens Corning installed into their shingle. It provides an extra thickness to the shingles and helps identify the right location for the nails. Now the entire roof is fully protected and is ready to protect the home again!
The owners found out about Klaus Larsen though our Santa Klaus Project. This Project has already given 2 roofs away to veterans. Learn more about that story Here. The owners were looking for a contractor who could do both the roofing and the siding. When we came and gave our estimate they liked the quality and the price and chose us to do the roof. On the day of install, our crew came and tarpped of the roof to protect the house from falling debris. Then the plywood was inspected and any rotten boards were replaced. Then the protective underlayment was installed which included 9 feet of Ice & Water barrier and synthetic underlayment. Lastly, the Owens Corning Oakridge shingles were installed in Brownwood.
These Quaker Hill homeowners were in the process of selling their home. Their roof was old and they knew they would have to replace it before they could sell. The house itself was built around the 1950’s which was clear by the fact that it still had tongue & groove boards instead of plywood. A few boards were damaged and needed to be replaced with 3/4” CDX plywood. During the job, the shingles were torn off completely, removed from the site, and carried away to be recycled. Then the plywood was inspected and rotten boards were replaced. On every roof replacement we undertake, we install 9 feet of Ice & Water barrier, use synthetic underlayment, install new drip edges, and install new chimney flashing. The owners chose Owens Corning Duration Shingles (Color: Teak) which are reinforced by the SureNail strip. This strips clearly show where the nails should be installed and holds the nails in place. The entire roof was completed and cleaned up in only one day and comes with a full warranty by an Owens Coring Platinum Contractor.
For this home in Colchester, the owners needed to replace the roof on their house, garage, and shed. When our consultant came and inspected the roof, the owners chose Brownwood Oakridge shingles for their home. All the roofs were stripped of old shingles and had new underlayment installed. For the Main house, we installed 9 feet of Ice & Water barrier. The remaining exposed plywood was covered with ProArmor Synthetic underlayment. Then the new Owens Corning Oakridge shingles were installed on the house, garage, and shed in one day. Other details included: skylight flashing, new fascia boards on the sunroom, and new brown aluminum gutters. The entire roofing system is guaranteed with a 50-year FULL warranty by Klaus Larsen as an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractor.
This home in Hartford two types of roofs: It had asphalt shingles on the main house and two small flat roofs attached towards the front. During our inspection of the roof, the owner pointed out several areas of concern. The gutter on the rear of the house was damaged and the fascia boards on the flat roofs were rotting away. The customer was very happy with the work we proposed and was able to do the project through our financing option.
When we came to replace the roof, our crew stripped the entire roof of asphalt and flat roofing. We then replaced 5 sheets of plywood before installing 9 feet of Ice & Water barrier. Next, we installed DeckSeal Flat roofing on both flat sections. We replaced the damaged gutter in the rear with new aluminum seamless gutter with LeafRelief gutter guards. We tore out the rotten fascia boards are replaced them with new pine trim boards that were then wrapped in aluminum. The entire process of tearing off the old roof to installing the last piece of chimney flashing took 1 day to complete. The entire property was also cleaned up and the roof is protected by our Owens Corning Platinum Warranty.
The owners, who live in Lebanon, were looking to replace their roof when then called us to give them a free estimate. After looking at all their options, they chose Owens Corning Duration Shingles. (Color: Chateau Green). While the roof was being replaced, we also replaced the ridge vent on the peak of the main house. The chimney flashing and vent boots were also replaced because these are easy water penetration areas if not properly flashed. Lastly, Premium Ice & Water shield was installed on the shed dormer roof due to its flatness. Low pitch roofs shed water and ice more slowly and require extra protection to prevent leaks down the road. The entire roof system is guaranteed though our Owens Corning Platinum warranty for 50-years.
The Klaus Larsen team was able to take on this wonderful opportunity! The Uncas Condominiums in Norwich, CT needed a roof replacement, all 14 units! After tearing off the old layer of shingles, the Klaus Larsen team got to work with replacing the old plywood and adding 3 rows of Owens Corning Weatherlock G Ice & Water to the roof before laying down the shingles! The shingles used were Duration TruDefinition Shingles in the color of Desert Tan!
The picture below shows the condos before (left side) and after (right side) Klaus Larsen replaced the roof!
This home in Norwich, Connecticut was suffering from a leaky skylight and old worn out shingles. To begin this job, we removed the existing layer of roofing material. Afterwards we cleared away all debris and used a magnetic roller to ensure that there were no loose nails in the homeowner's lawn. Next we inspected the plywood decking, and found that 10 sheets of plywood were visibly damaged and in need of a replacement. With the decking process finished, we installed two rows of IKO Gold Shield Ice & Water Barrier. At the seams we installed a 4" self-adhering flashing tape and installed a synthetic underlayment to ensure protection from the elements. For shingles, we installed a Klaus Roofing System using IKO Dynasty Architectural Shingles in the Castle Grey colorway. To finish the job, we installed a Shingle Vent II ridge vent that ensures the home's attic is well ventilated. This home is now complete thanks to Klaus Larsen Roofing!

This was a very unique, old home that was 800 square feet and made from fieldstone. The homeowner had lived there as a child and recently inherited it. She didn’t have an attic, and he had very poorly done rolled roofing on. There were lots of undulations in the roofing as well as footprints! It was 40 years old, and she was ready to get rid of her rolled roofing and put shingles on!
Our sales rep met this homeowner last year when he talked to him a bit and gave him his card. He just recently called for an estimate! The homeowner had a cute and humble ranch surrounded by mansions. Their insurance was going to drop them because they thought their roof was old, but it wasn’t too old and there wasn’t very much wrong with it. Our rep did find mold in the attic and suggested putting a claim in instead.
On this home in North Franklin, CT, the roof simply needed to be done. There were no major problems, but it was old, worn, and crumbling. The woman just moved in a little over a year ago and just wanted it done and over with. Upon inspection, she had two bath fans that were venting into her attic, so we had to reroute those to vent out the roof so she wouldn’t get mold in her attic. This problem she didn’t even know she was having, so we were happy we could help before it started causing long-term problems. She also had problems with the water shooting off the valleys and onto her porch, so we put valley controllers in. Valley controllers go under the shingle and the other part is inserted into the gutter. Its design helps slow the water down along the way and direct it into the gutters, rather than shooting off the roof.
We met this nice couple on a beautiful weekday morning. Besides the roof being old and not looking great, the quality was shoddy, and it also had algae on it. Algae causes moisture buildup, condensation around the nails, and small leaks. The cap shingles were also backward and nailed down through the shingle face. Usually, we would overlap other shingles on top of these nails because exposed nails generally lead to leaks.
They were very wary, and it took them some time to trust us and recognize us as professionals who wanted to help them. Previously, they had lots of problems with their chimney flashing. It was a big and beautiful fieldstone chimney, and it was the cause of all their anxiety. They had it fixed two or three times before. Eventually, they understood we would do excellent work for them and let us touch it to inspect the entirety of the roof properly. Our rep went up in the attic and on the roof to do his inspection. There were solar panels on the back, so they decided to go through with a partial roof replacement on the front of their roof!
This person was very interested and had two other quotes already. However, neither of the previous companies stepped foot into the house or went on the roof. They just gave them a number and then left without any explanation or examination of the roof. Once we started our inspection, we noticed mold in the attic due to poor insulation and ventilation. There had also been a tree branch that had fallen on the side of the house and cracked some shingles. Luckily, the insurance company was helping them pay for that. We also informed the homeowner that they would have to use an alternative ridge vent because they had a hip roof, and the ridge vent they had was prone to filling with debris. This was most likely why the homeowner had mold in the attic – because the only spot letting air into the home was prone to being blocked. On the roof, there were nail pops, and the shingles were easily lifted. The shingles also had a ton of algae and lichen because the home was out in the middle of the woods. The homeowner was very fascinated with everything we talked about and even scheduled a time to come into the office to show him around our products and models so he could understand better.

Klaus Larsen Roofing was scheduled for a roof inspection for homeowners in Salem, Connecticut. They were having issues with missing and curling shingles. When we made it to the property, we not only noticed how damaged the roof was, but the gutters were clogged with bird nest, leaves, and growing weeds. We were able to give the customer 5% off and a $500 coupon to help with upfront cost. The job is scheduled and we are going to get new gutters and a new roof put on in one single day. The photo attached is a perfect example of why 'Ice & Water' membrane should cover flashed areas like vents, valleys and chimneys. Water can easily sneak by into your home if it is not sealed properly. This membrane is vital because it is a final layer of protection against wind driven rain and pooled water.
