This was a 1 ½ story Cape built in 1948. The homeowner was getting severe ice dams on the front and especially near the rear of his house. They had air sealing and insulation installed, which did not resolve the issue. We found the structure only had gable-end ventilation, so we installed a vented roof deck with 5/8 ISO insulation and covered all of the deck with Ice & Water Shield for an added layer of protection.
This Manchester, CT roof was 23 years old and beginning to show signs of its age, with algae streaks and prevalent discoloration. The overhauled roof came equipped with all new aluminum seamless gutters & downspouts, as well as the 'seal, defend and breathe' combination of an Owens Corning System. Balanced attic ventilation, protection against nature's elements and a water-proof barrier are all components that must work in conjunction with one another, to be a functioning roof system. Every Klaus Larsen roof is installed with strict adherence to this criterion.
Here was a condo in Manchester, CT where the existing roof was malfunctioning. The first step was to tear off the original shingles, to be recycled into asphalt for paving CT roads. Klaus Larsen applied a combination of Ice & Water shield and underlayment to protect the plywood decking against moisture. We also replaced the vent pipe boots and added a VentSure Ridge Vent to increase ventilation and reduce the buildup of condensation. The shingles used here were GAF Timberline HD in Charcoal.
This small home in Manchester had 2 layers of shingles and needed new intake vents in the soffit. We replaced the ridge vents and installed new Cobra Fascia vents. Also, new aluminum seamless gutters were installed on the house.
Whether your home is small or large the time comes when the roof needs to be replaced. It could be because the roof is leaking or you it may be that the roof is just old and you don't want it to start leaking. This home had a roof had 3-tab shingles that were over 20 years old which is about how long a 3-tab shingle will last. By this point, the shingles had become completely blackened by algae. Our crews came and started around 7:00 am. They attached tarps to the roof edge before tearing the roof off. Then they removed the old skylight and covered the opening with plywood. Next, we installed self-sealing Ice & Water barrier nine feet up the roof. The crew also installed it around the dormer and in the valleys to protect those vulnerable areas. Above the Ice & Water, the Synthetic underlayment was nailed down. They finished off the roof by nailing down the Onyx Black Duration shingles. The owners also got a 50-year warranty from Owens Corning because Klaus Larsen Roofing is a Platinum Contractor with Owens Corning.
